Dave Friedman Introduces the All-New Friedman PLEX - In-Depth Review!
The All New Friedman PLEX. Get your PLEX at N Stuff Music right now:
www.nstuffmusic.com/product/161131
Dave and Sammy stopped by the store during our March Madness event this year, and shot a bunch of product demos for us.
Dave Friedman’s personal 1968 JMP Super Lead “Plexi” kicked off his lifelong quest for tone and inspired the entire Friedman Amplification product line. Friedman has earned the reputation of a master amp builder and capturing the magic of this unique amplifier has been his unrelenting passion-project for years. The Friedman PLEX head is the realization of that dream.
The PLEX is a “verbatim sonic-twin” of Dave’s all-time favorite amplifier - that special ‘68 JMP. Sparing no expense in time and effort, Dave took great care in defining and utilizing the best modern construction techniques, sourcing the exact parts and finding the perfect tubes to reproduce this amp’s character. The Friedman PLEX is, in Dave’s own words “my favorite.”
The Vintage Collection:
The PLEX is the first model in the Friedman Vintage Collection - a series of unique amp designs based on the classic amplifiers that influenced and shaped Dave’s Friedman tonal signature. The Vintage Collection captures the sonic nostalgia and authenticity of yesteryear, while infusing decades of Dave’s knowledge into each design.
Authentic Plexi Tone:
The PLEX is a 50-watt, 2-channel, EL34-driven design that meticulously captures the genuine Plexi tone and feel of Dave's revered 1968 JMP Super Lead. Distinct Lead and Normal channels, each equipped with their own Volume controls, replicate the non-master volume performance of its predecessor perfectly. The harder you push these channels, the more the amp responds with increased saturation, harmonic richness and sustained brilliance.
Internal Channel Jumpering:
The Friedman PLEX features internal channel jumpering, replicating the external blending technique used with vintage Plexi amplifiers. This feature lets you easily blend the Lead and Normal channels to perfection with the turn of a control knob. It’s a seamless and convenient sound-shaping method that pays homage to the amp’s history.
Friedman Post-Phase Master Volume Control:
A modern twist on the PLEX's vintage heritage is Dave Friedman's master volume control. As the Normal and Lead channels' gain increases, so does their volume. Dave’s innovative approach lets you bring the amp back to manageable levels, without sacrificing the tone or dynamic feel, he worked so hard to replicate. This unique post-phase master volume design ensured that, whether you're unleashing the PLEX's full power, or dialing it down for quieter settings, the amp's inherent character and tonal richness remains intact.
Tonal Flexibility:
Completing the PLEX’s sonic palette is a vintage-style tone stack comprising of Presence, Bass, Middle and Treble controls. This tone stack and the inclusion of Hi and Low instrument inputs allows you to sculpt a wide range of sounds and gain levels. The 3-position Bright switch further enhances the PLEX’s flexibility, fine-tuning the amp’s top end to different guitars, pedals, and pickups.
True to the Friedman standard, the PLEX boasts a bullet-proof design, unwavering build integrity, and top-tier components, guaranteeing that it will be a lifelong companion on your musical journey.

Straight Outta the Box - the Fender Tone Master Pro
Dude’s got some chops with that LP.
You know I had to subscribe. Great people work there. The salesman spent 3 hours with my Grandson explaining the difference between guitars. They set up the guitar and ensured he felt completely comfortable with his choice. I highly recommend this business.
Great music store. I purchased my Grandson’s first guitar from them. He purchased a Strat pack, but he wanted a Jake E. Lee Charvel. Next visit. I love this amp, it has a lot of versatility.
I love this colour.
In this video, for the position of the vol, tone and drive controls used (?), I hear (*) the red (KLON) with more mid-bass and more drive than the green (Soul Food). (*) My monitors are two 15" boxes!
He's guys this or the supralite?
play some fcking power chords through this.. how hard would that be? waste of my time.
6:06 LOL - yeah, it's hot in there. Reb's a beast.
OCD
Looks heavy
Did all of these parts have an arpeggio running? I thought the XF could only do 4 arps simultaneously? Dr, Perc, Bass, EP, Org = 5...
Is possible in lefty?
These are great guitars, for me even better than the Duesenberg Tom Bukovac signature which Jim has demo'ed so well. I wasn't a fan of the boost until I played it through the J Rockett Melody pedal, pre-boosted with by a J Rockett Rockaway on almost clean, crikey its sizzles. This is a fantastically clear guitar in the band sound. I've been scared of single coils for so long, clanking Strats, teeth-itch Teles etc, always opting for warm hum buckers, but I'm finding the tapped middle position with a bit of Nobels ODR1 gain is the best rhythm sound I've ever had, it really brings the best out of some quality pedals - also try the Valentine with some Wampler Ego compressor and the J Rocket Broverdrive, it brings a new meaning to the word chewy
After playing a Les Paul for a long while it’s crazy to hear how empty strats sound
I love NOT having a presence control
Have one coming in Texas Tea next week. Going to sound amazing on the PRS Acheron 50 combo amp. Great demo. Thank you.
Great playing! Alway love your videos, Jim.
Never miss a concert while they are in town. Brett is very very special
Siena sunburst
I pulled one of those down off the wall at a shop in Arizona. I didn't dare plug it in as I knew I'd be reaching for my wallet in short order (and would be in serious trouble at home). Beautiful guitar!
This is an unbelievable demo truly you really showed a decent amount of tunnel options. Obviously, this is certainly a tone monster no doubt from clean to high again. Wish we could have more work on the plexi side of the amplifier. However, my major question is this what is it look like inside, jacked up or the PCB boards this is the one app that Friedman does not discuss details about the build of even in comparison to the run the amplifier, although stated to have custom transformers, I have to wonder about the guts of the amplifier only because of compact size is this amp serviceable Friedman only quotes assembled in USA limited warranty. I truly just want to make sure that it is not so tightly packed in there that it can’t be repaired. It sounds great but I sure would hate to waste $1700 when for an additional eight or nine I can buy a SL 67, which is truly the yeah I like a little better anyway, but for the sake of money and my small band, trying to keep it within reason, thanks for any feedback 12:07
Block inlays and Grovers, I need one of these in my life
What's the name of the intro song?🙏🏽 Great sound!!!
That's horrible!
$100 per watt and it's got no bottom end? Pass.
What a great demo!
Regarding the bright caps please someone explain to me. Friedman says that to the center is off, to the right is 100 picofaraday and left is 4700 picofaraday, and the stock value for Marshalls in channel 1 would be 4700. But in the manual of this amp says that the regular position for channel 1 on a Marshal would be right. Shoudn´t be left? There is a contradiction in there
Охуенная гитара. Один раз в жизни держал в руках. До сих пор помню. Как первая любовь, блять
I don't know why, but I always hope the young "rockstars" from the 80's-90's, end up losing the long hair for a short do in later life. It just seems like they haven't fully "moved on" from the glory days.
This amp with a les paul is badass
The video is really disingenuous. The clips has WAY more gain than the amp is actually able to produce and you can hear that in countless clips on the web! So, Sammy has to be hitting the front end with something. Likewise, there is Delay, but no FX loop in the amp! So, somewhere being introduced and doesn't depict what the amp sounds like raw direct-in, which is only how all amps should be demonstrated!
COULDNT you get a slightly LESS rattley.tone for Memphis?? A little depth and sweetness?.
well you're wrong too >:) the first chord is actually a C#m7 instead of C#m
This is ironically, the worst sounding demo of this pedal that I have come across.
Maple is so generic sounding, oak is the best! Truly fantastic kit!
Built my own
Like listening to two different radio stations at the same time
Lathing, not lathering
I have this amp and have to say, this demo was by far the best I’ve seen. None of the over distorted nonsense like most of the demos have. What a great job you have done. I love my Mkv they certainly are brilliant amps, cheers.
Sounds great with your Tele! What kind of pickups?
This dude like the Ben Stein of guitar demos 😂
Well watch rick beato interview with the man who wrote it...not this way
I wish demos on amps were done without additional effects added so I can hear just what the amp is doing, at least to begin with. That echo or reverb was annoying. If you want to show how good it is with pedals and effects do it after presenting the amp alone.
Jesus, just play the thing
Great demo 👍
I do own that identical guitar except it came w/ AAA flame neck, A real beauty, I saved for over a year, then had to wait until the right gently used case queen came along in Fiesta red with the right neck etc. Its a fine instrument, The pups are quite hot for my taste I will probably swap them out other than that it is perfect. Fender quality seems to be at a high point right now as are most brands in this new golden age of guitar building. Only thing that concerns me is the availability of quality lightweight woods to get a CS strat under 8 pounds you need to pay xtra for it in most cases, some CS strats are heavy as I tried many in my search for one they seem to be pumping out the CS strats like a production line lately and the mastebuilt are now like the regular CS strats used to be. No Way I can spend 10 grand on a strat any time soon unless I got a bargain on a real vintage example then I would take out a loan though most agree a MB strat is probably a better sounding and playing guitar overall.
Cannot find these new anywhere nowadays...just the walnut cousin E22ss/v
I had one of the first runs, and it was Nitro.. What year did they switch to poly? For the record I prefer poly.
check out the margin on the guitars neck. The "margin" is the measurement of how the strings run up and down the neck. A "shifted" margin is when one the strings are closer to one side of the length of the neck than the other. This guitar shows the "Little E" string right on the edge of the fret board while the opposite side, the "Big E" string has nearly a quarter inch or more from the edge of the fret board. This is not difficult to correct but on a brand new guitar this is shameful. This is why I tell people all the time, DONT BUY NAMES...BUY QUALITY. Since the turn of the century, guitar manufacturers such as Epiphone, LTD, etc, have been producing some of the best instruments out there but the name brand snobs turn their noses up at them, even when the parts used , including the electronics such as pickups, are far superior to the "name" brands. Fender should be ashamed at the level of quality coming from their plants. But they dont care. the mass produce these things like any other production assembly line. Even Gibson has been putting out a lot of garbage guitars and charging people completely obtuse prices for the products. Just so you know, a normal solid body guitar such as a strat, or tele are really inexpensive when focusing on the materials. Probably around $680.00 in total including labor for the Ultra Strat. It takes about 25 minutes to put the guitar together and string it up in a manufacturer setting. Add another ten minutes to set it up. Out the door for $3k Everyone who is a serious player should take the time to learn the basics of working on guitars. If more people actually learned just basics, more people would understand the truth in the world of guitars. There's no secret stash of wood Fender and Gibson have access to that other companies do not. There's no secret pile of "tone wood" despite what PRS says. It all comes from the same place according to what country you are in. But ultimately, wood is wood. There's no secrets period. Until the mid to late 90's American companies had the goods in technology pertaining to building guitars but now, all companies have access to the tech. Therefore, all companies have the ability and technology to build fantastic guitars. Of course all companies build cheap and expensive guitars, but what happens when the expensive guitars are built cheaply? I am about to start making a few videos so people can see the truth, or more appropriately, hear the truth. Going to title the videos "Guess the guitar brand", "Guess the amp brand" etc.
I tried the ox attenuator, that thing sucks
